A powerful call to intentional spiritual living anchored the Central Jamaica Conference (CJC) Ministerial Spouses Association Retreat 2026, as Shepherdess Jardines O’Hara urged attendees to abide in Christ or risk serving on empty.
Delivering the Divine Hour message on Sabbath, April 25, at the Port Antonio Seventh-day Adventist Church, Dr. O’Hara, President of the CJC Ministerial Spouses Association, connected the concept of soul care directly to a sustained relationship with God.
Preaching from Exodus 33, she challenged the congregation to examine what truly sustains ministry. “What is progress, success, or blessing without God?” she asked, drawing a clear distinction between outward achievement and inward spiritual connection.
She cautioned against superficial faith, declaring, “There is a difference between visiting God’s presence and abiding in it…abiding means not taking a single step outside His presence.”

Emphasising the discipline required, she added, “You don’t stumble on abiding. It’s intentional, daily, deliberate,” underscoring the need for a consistent and personal relationship with God rather than occasional spiritual encounters.
Her message set the tone for the annual retreat, which was held from April 24 to 26 under the theme “Sista Pasta, Who Will Tek Care of Yuh?”
The retreat officially opened on Friday evening, April 24, with an online Vesper Service, where more than 68 devices tuned in as Shepherdess Carol Williams of the Florida Conference delivered the charge, “What About Her Soul Care?”
Williams, sharing Scripture and her personal experiences, encouraged ministerial spouses to prioritise their spiritual and emotional well-being as they support others in ministry.
Then, early Sabbath morning, Shepherdesses from the parishes of Manchester, Clarendon, and St. Catherine travelled to Portland on a deluxe bus. The journey itself became an act of worship, with Tamara Clarke welcoming the sisters and leading an icebreaker, followed by Shushorna Tate-Melbourne presenting the mission story and Dr. Gloria Gregory conducting the lesson review.
“We were up early to be here,” said Carlene Barrett, CJC MSA sponsor, as she greeted the Port Antonio congregation on behalf of the CJC Administration and the Shepherdesses. “Although we are visitors, can you see the excitement on my face? We are truly happy to be here, worshipping with you. It’s not about us, it’s all about Christ. Let us worship our God in the beauty of holiness,” Barrett implored.

During the retreat, Barrett read a message from Durcella Allie-Samuels, Chief Shepherdess at the Jamaica Union Conference. The message emphasised the retreat’s deeper purpose: “May this time provide an opportunity to pause, reflect, and reconnect with your purpose and calling. May you return refreshed, rejuvenated, and empowered.”
Host Pastor Linton Hamilton welcomed the group on behalf of the North East Jamaica Conference (NEJC) Administration and the church leadership, stating, “There’s no place like the house of the Lord…this is the place for worship,” setting a tone of fellowship and spiritual unity.
The Sabbath afternoon programme continued at the Match Resort Hotel, where Shepherdess Carla Douglas of NEJC addressed the ladies on the hidden realities of ministry life in her presentation titled, “Strong Outside, Tired Inside.” She highlighted the silent burdens many experienced, noting that maintaining a strong outward appearance while feeling physically, emotionally, and spiritually drained is a common reality among those who serve.

Building on this, NEJC Shepherdess Annmarie Manderson’s presentation, “Caring for Me, Finding My Peace and Purpose,” urged attendees to rediscover their identity in God and embrace His peace amid life’s demands.

The evening continued with a lively gift exchange, followed by an engaging discussion, “Nurturing Intimacy in Marriage: Sex Talk,” led by Ruth Haye.
Haye said, “Not only should you have healthy sexual relationships, but also healthy conversations about intimacy with your partner. Honest communication enhances personal well-being.” She highlighted that these are vital components of strong, God-centered marriages.
Sunday morning began with an inspiring devotional led by Kaydian Pryce. This was followed by poolside fellowship and a group excursion to Frenchman’s Cove Beach.
Reflecting on the retreat, several Shepherdesses expressed high praise.
“This was truly a beautiful retreat,” said Lana Brown. “From Sabbath worship to the pool and the beach, every moment was simply awesome. It was a time of full blessings and joyful fellowship. You are truly beautiful ladies.”
“This was much needed for me, powerful sermon, many lessons,” said Kaydian Pryce.
Orinthia Miller complimented, “Retreat 2026 was amazing from start to finish! My heart is full of joy. We had many DWL moments and were refreshed by Sabbath School on the bus, the divine service, and a powerful sermon. From the devotional charge to the fun and fellowship, I enjoyed every interaction with you beautiful ladies. May God continue to bless and strengthen you all. Love and blessings!”
Patricia Henry praised the leadership: “You didn’t just plan a retreat, you orchestrated a blessing,” highlighting the care and excellence in every detail.
“What a retreat! This exceeded expectations. After all my years attending retreats, I am fully satisfied. Sister Jardines and her team set a new standard, and I would go anywhere with them,” said Barbara Miller.
Dr. Gloria Gregory said, “I appreciated the extra care, attention, laughter, fun, and empowering presentations. Retreat 2026 was truly uplifting.”
“I just want to thank our President, Jardines Spaulding-O’Hara, and the entire team for such an awesome time. We are truly grateful for the extra mile you went to ensure we were well fed, cared for, and spiritually empowered. Ladies, regardless of your current state, remain faithful to God…keep sweet” added Roxanne McKoy Chambers.
As the retreat concluded, special appreciation was extended to the MSA Retreat Planning Committee, the MSA Executive Committee, and all sponsors for their invaluable contributions in creating a spirit-filled experience that left the spouses renewed and energised for service.
