The Northern Caribbean University School of Religion and Theology staged its annual Theological Symposium 2006 at the University’s chapel on Thursday, November 30, 2006. The symposium held under the theme, “Old Testament Typology” sought to reaffirm the Adventist teaching of typology and to dispel the mistaken view that the Old Testament is no longer relevant.

Keynote speaker, Dr. Richard M. Davidson, Professor of Old Testament Interpretation at Andrews University presented an enlightening, insightful and animated interpretation of Biblical typology. He stated that it was important to ensure that people understood the vital lessons God would have us learn through the use of typology.

Dr. Davidson’s presentation was divided into two segments. Segment one focused on the theme, “Biblical Typology.” He highlighted events in the Old Testament which foreshadowed events in the New Testament. He also identified several Old Testament events as types of Christ’s redemption, including the tabernacle, the sacrificial system, and the Passover.

During segment two Dr. Davidson spoke on the theme, “Sanctuary Typology in the Book of Hebrews.” He highlighted the fact that the Old Testament tabernacle is identified as a type in Hebrews 9:8-9: “the first tabernacle . . . which was a figure for the time then present.” The high priest’s entrance into the holiest place once a year prefigured the mediation of Christ, the High Priest.  The veil of the tabernacle he said is a type of Christ. The whole sacrificial system was also seen as a type in Hebrews 9:19-26. This passage teaches that the Old Testament sacrifices typify Christ’s final sacrifice for the sins of the world.

Dr. Davidson encouraged the participants to acquire a new zeal and deeper commitment to Christ. Many Christians he said still could not distinguish between what was abolished at the Cross and what is still applicable in today’s society.

Dr. Patrick Allen, President, West Indies Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventist, Dr. Herbert Thompson, President, Northern Caribbean University and Dr. Beverley Cameron, Vice-President, Academic Administration brought greetings.
