Pastor Edwin A Hyatt
June 17, 1922 – December 27, 2008
Pastor Edwin A. Hyatt,
the second president for Central Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day
Adventists passed away on December 27, 2008 in Silver Springs
Maryland, USA at the age of 86.
Pastor Hyatt was born on June 17, 1922 in St. Ann’s Bay, St. Ann,
Jamaica. He began his ministry in West Jamaica Conference in 1951
but became a part of Central Jamaica Conference in 1962 when the
Conference was formed.
While Pastor Hiram S. Walters served as the first president of
Central Jamaica Conference, Pastor Hyatt gave sterling support as
Health and Temperance Director (1962 – 1964), Sabbath School and Lay
Activities Director (1962 – 1964), Religious Liberty Director
(1974), Treasurer (1963 – 1966), and Executive Secretary (1964 –
1968).
After Pastor Walters was called to serve the West Indies Union
Conference, Pastor Hyatt assumed the helm and served as president
from 1968 to 1980. Pastor Hyatt was a cautious, practical and frugal
administrator, who saw to the consolidation of programmes of
Conference that got started in the previous presidential era. He was
very hard working, giving much attention to detail.
Under his watch as president the membership of the Conference grew
immensely, moving from 14,918 to 32,132. He also organized 13 and
dedicated 16 churches, laid the foundation for St. Ann’s bay High
School, built the second phase of the Conference office and the
first phase of Camp Verley and held the first Triennial Conference
Session.
One of the most memorable occasions as it relates to baptism was
when he organized and planned a one day baptism at Camp Verley to
baptize 1000 persons of which 617 were baptized. This accomplishment
has yet to be surmounted. He migrated to the United States of
America in 1980 where he lived until his passing.
He held a Bachelors of Arts degree from West Indies College, now
Northern Caribbean University, and a Master of Arts degree from
Andrews University, both in the area of Religion and Theology.
The contribution of Pastor Hyatt to the foundation of Central
Jamaica Conference is indelibly chronicled in its history. We owe a
depth gratitude to him for the twelve years of dedicated and
outstanding service.
The funeral service for Pastor Hyatt will be held on January 11,
2009 at 11 a.m. at the Spencerville Seventh-day Adventist church in
Silver Springs.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years Mavis and children, Beverley,
Marlene, Edwin Jr. And Charmaine.
